Types of Astrology

Some people rely their fate on various types of astrology. Know about the types of astrology and their origin.

Astrology is the study of cosmic influences, such as the motion of the Sun, Moon and position of the planets and stars that are believed to have great impact to all living creatures including the physical occurrence of events. Astrology is a very ancient practice of humankind. Different types of astrology helped ancient civilizations to determine when the best times to hunt, plant crops and celebrate. They could determine the change of season by looking at the position of the celestial bodies. As time went on, different cultures developed this knowledge into their own unique methods of reading and interpreting the movement of the planets, sun, moon and stars.

 Aztec Astrology

One of the earliest Mesoamerican System of studying astrology. It uses the rise and fall of the sun as a tool of the biorhythm for astrological calculations. The Aztec calendar is called Tonalpohualli, consisting of 260 days. Based on the 13-day cycle, there are 20 Aztec day signs each ruled by a god or goddess who represents the personality and the characteristic traits of the native born under a certain zodiac. Each 20-day sign has a name, symbol, and direction. The ancient Aztec astrologers also studied the mysterious influences of the stars upon the life of mankind on Earth. It divides the time between god or goddesses of the opposing forces, thus giving a special quality to each of the days of the Aztec calendar. Aztec astrology is still practiced in remote parts of Guatemala and Mexico.

Chinese Astrology

This system of astrology bloomed during the Han Dynasty. It is tightly linked with Chinese philosophy where it applies the theory of the three harmonies: heaven, earth and water. It also uses the principles of yin and yang, the lunar and solar calendar as well as the time calculation of each year, month and day. According to the Chinese system of astrology, there is a sixty year cycle of time and person’s year of birth indicates a certain phase or aspect of this cycle. There are twelve animals, which symbolize our fate. According to Chinese legend, the order of the twelve signs was determined by Buddha, upon celebration of the Chinese New Year. The Buddha invited all of the animals in the kingdom together for a meeting, but only 12 creatures attended. The first animal to arrive was the talkative Rat. The last to join was the resigned Pig. Buddha gave each animal a year of its own, bestowing the nature and characteristics of each to those born in that animals year.

Mayan Astrology

Mayan Astrology is the study of the cosmic plan, mankind and individuals. It encompasses everything, whether animate or inanimate, as a relevant part of the cosmic plan. The Mayan astrologer uses the Mayan calendar which also consists of 260 days. They believed that the Mayan Calendar is not just a measure of the passage of time, but it is a key in understanding the past and predicting the future not only for an individual but also of humanity or rather the cosmos as a whole. It analyses the progression of human consciousness over the ages and the evolution of ideas, thoughts, behavior patterns and actions.

Vedic Astrology

Vedic Astrology is a system that originated in ancient India, and was documented by sages in the Vedic scriptures. It is also known as Jyotish which refers to the science of light. So the Vedic astrology deals with astral light patterns that are thought to determine our destiny. Vedic astrologers believe that the study of Jyotish will help a person to fulfill their destiny here on earth and giving purpose for having been born. The basic principle of Vedic astrology is that all things are linked. The karma or fortune is determined by a predestined cosmic design. Each person is a soul incarnating in a body at a very specific time and place, and a person’s life is a reflection of the greater whole into which they are born. Each person has his own “birth chart” which contains the place and moment of birth.

Western Astrology

Western astrology is a system of astrology most popular in modern Western countries. It is historically based on Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos during the second century AD, which in turn was a continuation of Hellenistic and Babylonian traditions. It is composed of the twelve zodiacal signs that represent the twelve basic personalities. The twelve signs or symbols are subdivided into four basic elements, namely Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Another basis of division of the signs comprises of the three basic qualities, cardinal, mutable and fixed.

Medical Astrology

Medical Astrology is traditionally known as Latromathematics. Medical astrologers believed that parts of the human body are ruled by sun, moon, and planets, along with the twelve astrological signs (see Western Astrology above). They use this astrological system as a diagnostic tool that leads to speedy recovery and lasting cures. Once a person knows to what kind diseases he is primarily susceptible, he can guard against them from the beginning and thus live a long and healthy life.
